Battletech....

I've been pouring some good amounts of time into Battletech. I can now say that I've gained regained an appreciation for Inner Sphere mech's. I should step off my clan omni mech ivory tower more often.

The game is detailed but not as much of a sandbox as I'd have liked. Graphics are good and the sense of weight to the mech's give a pleasing feel especially when they take damage.

Travel scenes are quite nice even if they are mostly ignored, but I appreciate them.

The story may not have much voice work but the cinematic sided is great. Besides a bit of reading the artwork of the cinematics really is key. A style that works well.

The interactive choices are wide enough in events to have rewards/consequences. All along the lines of temporary buff's to crew abilities. Also dependent on how many upgrades to your ship are completed.

There are problems with some events and their context. Like calling a female mechwearrior "he" and "she" in the same paragraph. Depending on your level of immersion in the game this could be a bigger problem.

I was amused to see and recruit Recruit Happy. I will do everything to make him sad.

I was less amused when I lost an experienced mechwarrior, thankfully you can save and load at any stage. So a reload to just before the mission and a replay is great to have.

There are a lot of ship upgrades to do. Based on thee area's, mech bay's, med bay's and crew.

Essentially allowing you to buff crew abilities and training as well as mech repair and crew healing.
Each with it's own flavour events. Like a mechwarrior boosting a weapon stat, poker or holovid night bolsters crew moral or extra training adds skill points etc.

I do like the look of the fully upgraded/fixed ship with it's rotating pods.

The stroyline is a one way system with no real effects to your conversational choices. More flavour than anything else as it uses your chosen background from the start of your career. The biggest role-playing part of the game.

Besides all the really meaningful interaction is on the battlefield, as it should be in a mech game.

So another game I'm almost finished. With luck I'll get to clear a few more sooner rather than later.
