There's both a subtle and blatant side to tactics as you enter the slugfest of 60 to 100 ton mech's. Having a lance consisting of an Atlas, King Crab and two Highlanders is epic. A long journey from leg sniping light mech's at the start.
This game has me remembering my Command and Conquer day's, engage the enemy on a map, learn their placements and tactics, save, test a tactic, retest, reload some more and with a pinch of luck you get there. Maybe with an overabundance of heat restarts but you get there.
It's a game I really like getting my team hammered and pushing them through. Pushing the limits. I can see myself reloading certain missions or taking more high end contracts to mess about with different mech's and their fittings. For the fun of it. Testing out weaker lance mech/fits that support each other against bigger enemies is a nice if self imposed challenge. I'm glad to be able to do it in the game. Sometimes what you think is going to be an easy fight can turn around and sucker punch you. A lot of options for replay-ability.
The end game lets you free on the entire map, which is a small portion of the franchise universe, but bigger than the campaign's restrictions. There are a lot of retailers but the best mech's depend on personal preference(full shop list). Thankfully I had good luck in mech salvage. Or should I say I selectively gained salvage to equip all my mechwarriors. No outright mech purchasing meant I had cash to do other tings. Like repair and upgrade the Argo.
Mech's, fittings and tactics are again a personal playstyle thing. Whatever works for you with whatever you can get your hands on and make work for you. I've enjoyed the salvaging, especially getting the parts to form a mech I couldn't afford to buy.
Mid game my bay's were leaning on a lot of Dragon's, JagerMech's and Quickdraw's but they were quickly mixed with more Orions, Awsomes, Battlemasters and a Thunderbold or two. It's all a very ad-hoc, very battletech feel, and I love it for that.
Thankfully my late game sees no problem with cash so getting more and better salvage instead was always a winning move.
My main two lances have ended up like this:
The Atlas as my main usable mech is out of necessity, you need the tonnage to survive the hits.
My love of all things Clan/Omni tech has made me hone in on the (LRM)Catapult variant which in turn gave me a greater appreciation of the Stalker. A mid to late game favourite and a dedicated place in my mech bay.
Just as the starter blackjack will always be in storage for sentimental reasons. Alongside two (a PPC and LRM) catapults. 4 personal mech's outside of my "main", can you tell I'm into the game at all :)
