When I said(here and here) Diplomacy is Not an Option was a long-term-casual game; It seems's not the case in actuality. It's pretty much dropped out of all game-play existence for me. No matter how in depth or obsessed I am with some games; Once I loose 'that connection' with a game it's a hard thing to get back. For me and this game it's the game mechanics that both draw me to it and push me away.
Another game that if I was 'so into it' I'd be playing it for at least a few minutes here and there. It just hasn't been happening. So the long-term-casual I thought it would be just hasn't worked out. It ticks a lot of boxes for me as a game but it's not a game that's been drawn me back in with any kind of frequency. Even as a game to dip in and out of with all the save slots a player could want; It's demands are too high regardless of time. The further you push in a save the more you need to remember and reassess when you reload a save after a break away from it; Re-working what was next on the 'todo' priority list before the next wave hits.
That aside the aspect I think that has pushed me away is the tempo of the game, always on the go unable to really savour what you've built/amassed/trained. There are epic moments when large waves crash on your defences and army; Or as you rain down destruction seeing the enemy thrown into the air.
Buuuut that's also not to say that the endless, no enemies mode(and other options) don't let a player do the savour option..... I've tried them but it's just not an option for me. I'm sure there's a happy medium but it seems to be a lot of work to tune it. Then again as a player I'm missing out on story and the main campaign. Yea I'm being picky, I want the average game with more options that makes the game not the game it's supposed to be. As they say "can't please all of the people all of the time".
I'm glad I bought it. I'm glad to have played it; And if I get a good amount of time with motivation I may game in it again. Never say never. But for now and the foreseeable I have far too many other games that are more immediately playable and give more enjoyable fun.
The game is still being worked on; So as a player a break and later return may not be such a bad thing.
