Games with Gold....
First things first, the big ticket item for me and a game I once thought of buying outright Hitman: The Complete First Season; Claimable from September 1st to 30th. I've already gotten a number of freebie parts of the game but this complete package will make it a 'proper' product to potter about in. Given that I've 100%'d the the game on PC and still working away on the second game(PC) and the legacy version of the first game in that second game; I'm not sure if or when I'll ever get back to the Xbox version. Nice to have, very very nice.
Earth Defense Force 2025 can be claimed from September 1st to 15th. While I'll claim it I've no interest in it. It or the previous 3(?) games that have been given away free from the same franchise. It's a game series that is down to personal taste, love it or hate it. I don't love it and I don't hate it. I just don't like it and I can spend my game time elsewhere.
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is claimable between September 16th to 30th and looks to be button mashing fun. I can see myself playing this till my random button mashing doesn't work and then moving on. No e-sports precision for me but I'll get some fun out of it.
We Were Here is claimable from September 16th to October 15th and looks to be an interesting co-op puzzler. Not sure I'll be playing it but good to have. Interesting to note it's also a free to play game on steam.
Battlefield 1....
Rush mode is a combination of BF1's other larger more strategic modes. It's a whittled down more concentrated form of intense action with strategic objectives. Want to be a sniper lurking around the map looking for targets, it's big enough to do that. Want to be a support and hammer away long range, sure why not. Want to be the assault and charge in head first spraying bullets everywhere, you can do that. Want to be a medic and have all the praise heaped on you, f**k yea!
While I've been enjoying a mountain of Rush mode matches recently there was one that ticked all the boxes. So the next mashup video is a condensed version of that match. It may have been a win for the opposing team but it was a kickass match and fun to play.

STO....
Never say never.... Some more tweaks/changes to the ship fit as well as their level upgrade. This time the addition of the other Discovery rep space set, Lorca's Ambition.
Seeing as I already had the torpedo fitted I felt I might as well add the console and dual beam bank. The other motivation was mainly down to not needing to grind and replace all the forward dual beam banks. Thankfully just the one was needed for the set and your only allowed to fit one anyway.
The latest patch has made some changes to abilities that may have given false stats to previous DPS charts. Adding the set post patch seems to have decreased the overall DPS of the ship by minus 2500, but that may be down to needing to update the software. Be it down to the game patch, DPS software or the new fit, further study is needed.
That's the problem with looking at stats/numbers, no matter what MMO your in. For STO, DPS output isn't everything; Yet it's such a definable overarching point, a single number you can hold up as greatness, failure or mediocrity, regardless of the fun factor.
The recent news about an in game test/DPS parser/feedback scenario is epic news!
I also went back to a mission "Home" which I'd done when it originally came out but never redid since to pick up the Phased-Waveform Beacon device reward. Another one to add to the inventory and access during space combat if/when needed. Options!
I've seen some great, well equipped and powerful canon builds on player ships in TFO's again recently. I'm sure that type of build is a lot more complex and needs a ton of min/max'ing to make happen. For me I'll stick to the cannon build I have, it's not totally useless but the ship I'm sure could be better used with an application of different weaponry. As I can't do cannon builds I'll stick to the "cannon builds suck" theory and fly what I do have for fun.
I did the last Arena last Thursday for the Section 31 Rifle. That went around fast!
Not that I'll use it. Maybe an alt or their crew might get some use out of it. Maybe, maybe not, I'm still fond of a previous unlock the Mirror dual pistols. The burst fire from multiple bridge officers can be hilarious to watch as they melt an enemy group.
I've also tweaked my main's, main weapon. Removing my much loved multi hitting Fluidic Assault Beam for the sat in a bank, free lobi bought Boolean Heavy Assault Cannon. Keeping the Exchange bought Herald Beam Projector staff as the dusty unused secondary.
It might be handier if I set the secondary to a winter event weapon......
Since switching out the Fluidic weapon I found a situation where I needed to tag multiple npc's for an endeavour mission. Given the number of players pouncing on every spawn I was glad to be able to multi hit npc's in groups. Very situational but funny to need it after a main weapon reassessment and swap out.
Going into the ground team build can be as much hard work as getting the ship right.
I'm happy with what I have and the recent changes I've made to my character. As for Bridge officers, I'm open to changing their abilities but I'll back away slowly from even attempting to min/max the ground side. Besides I'm sentimental about the officers, they've been with me since day one.

WoW Classic....
I've found myself thinking a lot about the release of wow classic; Unsurprising since it's only a few days away. However the more I think about it the more I'm questioning my hype for it. Hype based on nostalgia. I've been trying to think about the 'old days' in a very mundane day to day kind of way. It's easy to relive the nostalgia for a day or two even on a starter character but to maintain activity and interest in the game for three months or longer. I've started to think about the more off putting roadblocks, like having to grind gold.
Straight off there's going to be a massive influx of players. Nostalgia will keep them in game for a while. WoW players are nothing if not persistent. So I might wait a month or two for the majority of players to hit the game and leave. Once the initial nostalgia kick is done and the world is 'normalised' I can see myself being more at ease with the game. Last thing I want is to be waiting about for hours of questing with large groups all ready to pounce on the next spawned mob.
I'm trying to be practical about a return to any form of WoW. The need for some mods will be paramount. It also depends on how serious I take progress etc.
When/if I get into WoW classic I'll try to not mimic the way I played originally. I've searched the online forums to see if any old guilds/players I've been with are mentioned but nothing shows up. Pity. Maybe they are as undecided as I am. What was, was. This new Vanilla, this classic take, I'll stick with three classes that I really enjoyed in PvE and PvP a Hunter(beast), Priest (Disc) and a Warlock(demon). Still undecided on faction. Lots to consider....

Controllers again....
It's been a few months since I blogged about getting the new cheaper yet surprisingly good quality controllers. But I've been lazy and not ordered the thumb caps, which I mentioned in my original post. A trip out shopping last weekend found myself randomly see a set of 4 Xbox One thumb caps for a few euro. I took the option to get them. I know I could have gotten more, cheaper online but that hadn't happened yet and these were right there....
The original finish to the controller thumb sticks isn't the worst but it's not the best either, but way better than anything else concave I can put on them. Small but very subjective thing.
Grips from gioteck. Talk about over stating the product. The packaging makes them seem like they're part of a space program. Just rubber thumb caps, one step above a party balloon!
The grip textures on the ones I bought are the opposite colours, the four-dot is white and the multi-dot is black.
However the two multi-dot caps are not worth the money, the feel may be the same material but they are concave, so hump up in the middle; I prefer them the other way for thumb comfort.

With the new (2 convex 4-dot) caps fitted the improvement is immediate, well worth the few extra euro to 'finish' off the feel of the controller. Softer yet still sturdy. Little differences matter.
As for the other two caps I'll ignore their existence and maybe in the future buy the ones I originally mentioned.... At some stage.....

Minion Masters....
The game plays exactly like a cross of HotS and Hearth should; Build a deck and unleash the minions! But instead of blathering on I'll show a match we won(Blue Team). Not a perfect match, some miscalculation, some rash decisions but fun had all the same. GG
I've never put any cash into either Blizz game and I've no intention of putting cash into this one. But free to play and fun is good. Time will tell if we stick with the game short or long term.

Remastered....
There's a number of remastered games due out that I've an interest in. Three have been mentioned in the gaming news in the last week. Commandos 2, Preatorians and System Shock 2.
I liked the original Commandos game, more than the second and third even less so. That didn't stop me from picking them all up cheap on a steam sale a good while ago.
Nostalgia and a quick reload of old saves was enough of a retro experience. The games are very much of their time and a remaster of the second seems to be aimed as a nostalgic trip for past players. That and seeing how many platforms the remastered Commando's 2 is going to hit, may seem to some as a bit of a nostalgia driven cash in..... It's a good game I just don't see how much of an interface/control tweak they can do to make it a better version that players want today. Time will tell.
Pretorians is a game I recall as being hard(ye olde guide). Hard in a way where your unit limit is just about enough to complete each mission/scenario. A good challenging game. One I'd prefer over the Commandos 2 remaster. It had a good soundtrack as well. All my old saves are dated between March to July of 2003 so I'd say I got value from the original purchase. Unlike Commandos I never got another copy of the game. I'm thinking that this new version could be the one I can get retro nostalgic with.
And last but not least System Shock 2. I've waffled on about my previous experience of the game. An updated "enhanced" version would be great to play as the game does have atmosphere in spades. Updated graphics can only add to that.
You asked for it and we are working on it... System Shock 2 Enhanced Edition coming soon!!! 💾#RetroGaming #SystemShock2 pic.twitter.com/vV5zBtUfWj— Nightdive Studios (@NightdiveStudio) August 12, 2019
-----------------------
With Pretorians on the mind I got the original CD version of the game off the shelf. While it's been pretty much been staring me in the face for years I've never tried it again. Popping it in the drive on my pc (hassle I had getting a DVD drive spec'd on a pre-order PC) it worked/installed a charm, no hassle whatsoever! It seems weird needing to have a disk in to play a game. Retro is retro. I'm surprised how well the install went with Windows 10. Being an older game on an modern PC the loading screens were a blink of an eye. What did take a while was video reading from the CD!
The game play's well, the un-patched(v1.02) straight off the disk worked best for me. Updating it to v1.04 was no hassle and the patch can still be found online; But it screwed up the intro/graphics and needed a tap on the escape key to get past a black/blank screen; Other occasions needed the process killed and a relaunch.
Depending on the game version some saves wouldn't load for me so saves are version dependent. So that has me wondering if the remastered version will have problems loading up my older original saves. For Nostalgia it was fine to faff about with the CD version but if you need to dig deeper with a patched version it will be more of a hassle,m not only with saves but with game mechanics.
Pretorians V1.04 patch details are here:

Praetorians Patch 1.04 - Details
War machines no longer refuse to attack an enemy that is already sustaining heavy ranged attacks.
A message was not being displayed correctly in Fear the Eagles, it will now.
Bowmen in defense towers could stop responding, this is fixed.
Corrected a missing slash when experience points are highlighted (German).
The Wolf and Hawk no longer freeze when ambushed Hunters are nearby.
Fixed some situations where the German Cavalry could get stuck.
User name no longer can be the same as a CPU player when hosting a game. This had the side-effect of confusing unit control and ownership.
Fixed some situations where Bowmen in defense towers could stop attacking.
"Save Sequence" button no longer shown after playing back a recorded sequence. Resaving the sequence would corrupt the file.
Signal Allies is now functional when enemy/allied troop are selected.
Mirage no longer halts inferiority or keeps the game from ending.
Alt-F4 while in the Stats screen after winning a mission, will record the mission as completed.
When launching from lobby like Gamespy, the game no longer automatically includes the CPU players configured in the previous game. This used to prevent human players from joining the game from the lobby if the total number of humans + CPUs exceeds 8.
Demoting with multiple troops selected no longer fails if one of them is light Infantry.
Ladders built by different civilizations are now correctly grouped under the same icon and selected with double-click.
Repeatedly hitting space while the app is restoring from minimized state could cause side-effects when the Accept / Cancel dialogs are up.
German Cavalry's Impale charge can now be cancelled.
Joining troops that can be joined no longer causes the "Impossible" sound clip to be played in some instances.
Demoting with multiple selection containing light infantry is now possible.
Time to faff about with some more old game saves.

STO....
With all the recent ship module/weapon upgrades I've burnt through a lot of dilithium; So getting some more back while the summer event is going isn't a bad thing. Likewise the Phoenix event, I'd discounted the red matter device before but getting more though the event is easy. The real grind which I don't consider a grind is the current Arena voucher/rep reward. Why am I pro the new rifle reward now? I watched a review video from STOunrefined, but it was a phrase he used that clicked with me; Essentially claim the reward and maybe in the future it could be useful. That sentiment is me all over as well. If I'm doing stuff daily then adding one more element isn't that big a deal. Mix all that in with the daily endeavour system and it's a process that can be lengthy enough. But because it's so varied it doesn't fell like it takes a long time. 40 minutes, maybe an hour maybe less. More fun than any kind of grind feeling. I've had longer and worse in WoW.
I've also added in a few Omega mark, Borg bashing TFO sessions to claim several kinetic cutting beam's/rep reward. I've reworked my active ship roster to remove all the 360 cannons for 360 omi/specific beam weapons. Beam weapon synergy, or as much as possible given ship setup.
It's a shame that you can only equip one of each type of 360 beam. I've settled with a cross section of damage, Omni beam 360, damage specific 360 beam and kinetic cutting beam being the common trio added(Martok 360 for those of a Disruptor persuasion).
So with the ship fit tinkering changes I've also added in a few other modules to complete space sets. I can now group my active ships into 5 groups from 'best' to 'worst' DPS.
First my current main:
The next two, second best:
The next two are useful but not fully upgraded in module levels:
The nest ship is one I'd have added to the last last group but then I'd have added a T-5 Upgrade to a duo of T6 ships. The Tholian Meshweaver, good as it is, even fit tweaked is still a bit 'lesser' of a setup. It may not be much worse, but it's still lesser to a T6(start internet starship debate!).
And then lastly the (most utterly useless yet) absurdly fun cannon build:
I've seen good cannon builds, I've seen great cannon builds but to pull it off on a ship you need the best gear. I do not have that. Last position it is.
I'm not sure if there's much more tweaking that can be done to them. Maybe I'll learn something new that I can act on. For now they are 'done'.
I've been toying with the idea of getting my main into a Fleet/Armada and while fleet invitations are as spammed as guilds in WoW, there are one or two big names that keep popping up. Time will tell.
Fleet modules could be the next step for me.

STO....
Part of STO's quirky nature can be some surprising animations. I've noticed a few glitchy cloaks in the game, this one on an NPC during a mission was screenshot worthy. Maybe it's looking for Dr. Strange!

STO....
I've been doing more changes to what I consider my two best ships. My old main ship(Vorgon Heavy Escort) and it's replacement(Risian Corvette). Both oddly enough gained through the summer event. Seems apt in a way. So a bit of time in further streamlining their fit in order to do a few more rounds of DPS analysis. All in all it doesn't change the Risian over the Vorgon previous results; But I needed to see how these tweaked ships would do on the second (mid) level of TFO difficulty. In a way STO's TFO difficulty scale a lot like WoW's dungeon difficulty. Normal(STO)/Normal(WoW), Advanced(STO)/Heroic(WoW) & Elite(STO)/Mythic(WoW). However I'd say in reality STO's difficulty is higher each level up. *titles for comparison only*.
So yea, I ran both ships through Advanced on the same TFO a few times. I'm a believer in each ship having it's own permanent fit. Both fits work but I'm against having a fit that I switch between ships. That's a me thing and a huge skew in data analysis. All that said I do enjoy each. Got the Vorgon up to just under the 16.5K mark(ish) and the Risian to around the 20k(ish) mark.
I'd been tempted to bring the Bajoran Interceptor into the mix; The ship and it's set would prove to be worthy. But I decided against it, in this testing that interceptor would be a fraction behind the Vorgon. Maybe worth the effort but only if there wasn't such a big gap between the Vorgon and the Risian ships. I'm still bummed out about the Cannon fit Fek'Ihri S'Torr Warchip, pity it's not up as a contender.
While I bemoan the mothballing of my previous ships the Vorgon is the hardest to part with. It's fit is like my old way of ship fit thinking. The Risian the new. I appreciate true ship sets now more than ever. Sentiment aside I've super happy with the ship that's top dog now. Like I said both were from the same event so there's a symbolic handover there. I also think I'll be sticking with Advanced TFO's over Normal. There more educational on the current game meta, more rewarding and more action packed for fun. I'd dare not do an Elite TFO, I'm sure I'd end up being scrapped off a boot!
It'll be interesting to see what the next free ship will bring. The new episode reward, then the Winter event and then the 10th anniversary.... Interesting times ahead.

No Man's Sky....
A new epic trailer for another epic update to the game.
It's been a long time coming. 'Beyond' will be released on the 14th. It seems like it will be more than worth the wait. Yet I still can't bring myself to be excited about it. I've never wanted to share the game world or play experiences with other players MMO style, so nothing new there for me.
The updates and changes look to be good, great even. A game with this much support after it's start, really is something to behold. I can see it living long into the future with multiplayer.
Best of luck if your into it. Yes I'm probably missing out. In the back of my mind I can't shake the once bitten twice shy feeling. I was into the game and had that journey taken from me, no updated features can give that back.
I'm not bitter, they had to do it for the game, it was an inevitable change I never new was coming so it hit hard. Angry at lost time/energy/gameplay, sad that the experience, my experience, my own procedurally generated journey was taken away from me. That means nothing to anyone else but it was everything to me and my gameplay; That's all.
Maybe I am bitter about it, I thought I'd let it go for the most part. Now I'm reminded with every patch of what I should have had. That special journey, my own finality.
I hung on for a long time to test patches in some form of hope to rekindle the spark. That never happened. The game got uninstalled.
Everything I see and read about the game is great, better, vastly improved yet still does nothing for me.
Twice bitten twice shy.
Maybe in the future I'll finally let it all go and start from scratch. Starting with nothing I'd have nothing to lose. Take a starship, keep it simple, enjoy the journey....

STO....
With a lack of interest in other MMO's(WoW and Eve Online) in my gaming lineup; I've found STO moving from casual fun once in a while to a daily login. With more and more time. Not just because there've been events requiring a daily task, but to spend time in, faffing about and enjoying. The more time I've spent in the game the more I'm reminded that Star Trek Online (to me) is more a celebration of all things Star Trek. Like a giant interactive convention. Role play if you want, captain who you want how you want in whatever ship you want. Each player enjoying their own adventure, solo or not. It's all about the experience. You can be as immersed in Trek as much as you want to be.
This last week STO I've been all about upgrading my mains ship fits to get as much practical DPS out of each. Doing this I realised it's exactly what I'd be doing with WoW characters. WoW's loss is STO's gain. While I'm not as into it as much in STO as I was in WoW, I am still into it. My main is the only character that has a range of well fitted ships on par with being a max level. Most of my alts have that one main 'good' ship. I could just stick to one ship per character, but there's more fun to be had with different ships/fits. My main is where it's gotten some serious attention.
Unlike wow STO isn't modable. I have always felt daunted at the use of the external DPS program but I took the plunge. All in all it was easier than I thought to setup and use.
Install the program (https://dps.shivtr.com/pages/STOSCM / https://www.sto-league.com/guides/).
Start STO's launcher and add in a command line under 'options'(-noautorotatelogs).
Launch the DPS Combat meter.
Log in and enter STO proper.
Each login requires a console command that can be hot keyed so that combat logging can begin(/combatlog 1).
Play the game and combat will be logged.
That's really it. Finish the game and in the program select the combat log and see the data.
It's not all after action reporting. The button allowing the real-time parser is great for seeing you and your groups DPS during actual combat.
My main has had a clear out and dry dock of ships, leaving him with 7 that can be selected. 3 of those are not up to scratch. 2 T6 and a T5-Upgrade but all three are only fitted up to level XII(12) weapons/modules. So not fair game in a DPS test and I doubt I'll upgrade them. The only reason they haven't been dry docked is that they do have a semi decent build; Just not top of the line....
This leaves 4 ships.
The same character with the same traits, I ran the remaining 4 ships through the same TFO multiple times; With a few exceptions here and there to see overall levels of DPS in comparison to random groups. Not scientific but it's an good indication.
So my two best ships, the Vorgon Xyfius Heavy Escort and the Bajoran Interceptor have both been pushed down by the new Risian Corvette with it's 4 piece Discovery set. It just pips them on the DPS output.
Not by much, all three ships are the same build more or less. Overall the three could be averaged out around the 10k DPS mark. For a PvE carebear with no meta build knowledge, from what I know as a complete casual, that's not bad.
I admit I did give a bit of a whoop when I saw the numbers from the first combat log analysis. Proof in the pudding as a solo casual that I was bringing DPS to the party. I'm happy with that knowledge and these ships.
All of the above has me thinking that I can trust my gut for ships/fits and run with how things 'feel'.
The last ship is one I thought would have had bigger numbers with, but no...
The warship with it's cannon build in a TFO 'feels' like it shreds!
But there is a lot of other beams and bolts flying about in space. I may be seeing lots of large numbers in space but the DPS logs prove the ship and fit to be more bark than bite. All show, half the substance. An illusion in a group with higher DPS. I was a little disappointing.
It's a fun ship to fly, really fun; Like a Porsche on a race track. But in a TFO the Porsche doesn't handle the weekly shopping haul. It's not practical no matter how fun it feels. The numbers prove that.
Proof also that confirms what I've read in chat numerous times, which I had discounted "Ships with cannon builds suck".
All in all, I still can't shake the 'feel' that any other fit on this ship is wrong.
The ships chain gimmick to drag enemy ships behind and roast them with the flames from your engines is also an addictive trait. The ship is fun.... I wish it had the DPS.
With all these numbers and graphs I've come to a few conclusion on the make up of PUG TFO groups.
There is usually one or two elite players(or their alt) who know the Meta and how to get max DPS out of their ship/fit/traits (15K+ in DPS). Most higher DPS players run content within their Fleet/Armada.
There's another player or two in the middle ground like me(5ish to 12ish K DPS). Players who have a bit of savvy knowledge and can upgrade/buy gear to up the numbers. Maybe use traits but cover the jack of all trades methodology.
Then there's the bog standard player who uses the weapons the ship came with, slaps on whatever is in inventory even if there's no synergy. No upgrades and bits missing from the fit. Jalopy in space. I'm not assigning blame for that, all players start from somewhere and learn what they learn or not.
I still have a built in intolerance (from my WoW days) where if you ran a dungeon once you needed to remember every detail/group need/positioning/tactics. So if a new TFO is out and a few month's pass, it's my default position/brain hardwired to automatically noobify anyone who 'appears' to not know whats going on with it. Harsh on all counts, regardless of DPS count, yet true enough. As I've said previously, STO is an adaptable game allowing for different levels of players to join together and accomplish content. I've yet to do a normal TFO and fail it or been driven from it due to difficulty. Maybe once in a more 'pro' encounter ages ago. Fun is fun in different ways to different players. And all this stat guesswork is just that guesswork. Guesswork is guesswork, Interesting guesswork. I'm learning slowly as well, stats and attitudes.
The summer event is done and with it I've gained a new primary ship and it's fit.
The upcoming road-map of the game is promising in content and rewards if not the overall theme(for me). I've no interest in the Arena of Sompex or it's rifle reward. I've also no interest in the 'August' lockbox's.
I do have an interest in the new TFO for September's content due to it's rewards, specifically the new T6 ship. The Patrol system revamp, with luck should provide good ongoing content and should be interesting to see. October's Kobayashi Maru is also good content and rewards some sort of deployable drones this time round; More info on that reward needed.
Novembers Featured TFO is probably an extension of the September T6 ship grind reward from 'Awakening' to finish off that story-line.
Then we're into December and the usual Winter event with Q. That event see's yet another new ship but given that it's the same Fek'Ihri racial as my cannon build above I'll be hesitant. I'll do the event and claim the ship but I need to really see the stats and what gimmick is has. I presume there is one.
Then the big one. STO's 10th Anniversary in January. I hope the celebration lineup in game is as epic as I think it should be. Teased with the line "Ships you've been waiting for...". I only hope that things are free, involve no grind.... And.... Are not store specials.
