With the joy of the game and my last post I went into the next DLC(Resurrection) and was both surprised and disappointed. It and the other DLCs following on are not to my liking.
When I say DLC I mean combat campaigns and not extra ship/filler content.
I have 900 engagements in the main campaign and 120 in the Sin and Sacrifice DLC. Fair to say I took my time and 'enjoyed' just doing combat with the never ending supply of cylon fleets. That first DLC I tried was the 'Sin and sacrifice' follow up. It's a perfect follow on DLC for the main campaign, which included an import of a main campaign save... It was, dare I say, a perfect follow on. It took all that came before and built on it.
The next 3 DLC's not so much when they essential wipe the slate clean as well as change the goalposts.
It was exciting to see and walk in the Galactica CiC.... Less so to see the lack of a large map table, never mind the lack of my previous fleets, tylium and requisition points. All taken away..... Only a token RP/Tylium stipend given on save import.
I get that the game was developed over a longer time period and had DLC released at intervals with 'fan's buying into it as it was released; Season on season. For me in the here and now, getting it as an all in one package going into the later DLCs, it's jarring. The map is smaller and your fleets are gone. It's a shock. As I said importing a save only brings a limited amount of Tylium and Requisition Points. It's a let down, a big let down. Granted I know there's a time skip in narrative, a change in characters... But I can't get over it. My own attachment may be the problem. A me thing.
Yes it's nice to see the Galactica CiC to hear the Dradis noise etc.... It's good that Silas in command is now a voiced active character..... But even the Galactica in the show had a bigger operations room and I wish my character, the one in charge was there instead of being a flag officer on the active bridge of a Battlestar. It feels off. Feels limited in scope and scale not to mention boxed in from a control fleets kind of way. Some may say the lack of complexity is a more streamlined take but I can't see it that way. To me it's going from a supreme commander with a galactic overview to a ship captain and a blinkered view..... Narrative explains it but I'm not buying into it.
These later DLC's do have decent narrative and characterizations but I feel less connected with them than the campaign and S&S DLC..... That's just me, so I'm in no way wanting to play the DLC's.... To put in more time on building up fleets again. At least the later DLC's can share full save imports. Fleets and all. I'm just really lacking the motivation to play it all and build things up.
The new take of the DLCs that I do like is that you can trade ships. What I'd have given to have that option in the main campaign.
I've only made it less than 10 'turns' into the Resurrection DLC.... I skipped it and went to the next DLC; The start of the DLC's recaps the previous story..... And then went on to the next. Those three do nothing for me(Resurrection, Ghost Fleet Offensive or Armistice). So I'm a bit lost for direction. I've seen the start and ending cinematics to get 80% of the story..... And I don't care. Which surprises me. I'm not even into the Blood and Chrome themed DLC 'Ghost Fleet'.
The later 3 DLCs may have narrative but it's not enough to make me want to play more in the 'refined' interface. There's no quorum to maintain standings with and gaining ships feels like dealing on a black market for scraps when resources are tight. Which could be interesting but for me in these DLC's it feels like restrictions for the sake of restrictions than anything caused by war.
A good UI feature is the enhanced versions of the 'usual' menus. They are sharper and brighter And very much remind me of older amber/green terminals from the 80's. That's a personal thing. I'm fine with the old main campaign menus The difference is interesting to see but inconsequential.
I can't say I've not gotten value form the game so far. Maybe I'll take a good bit of time away from the game and come back with more passion to 'get into' the DLC's..... Time will tell.
