Sniper Elite 5....

Since the last time I've posted I've been playing the game and trying hard to 'like' it. More accurately(sniper pun?) trying to understand it. It has some good elements, it's 'just' the implementation that's disappointingly lacking; Bad and broken in ways that remind me so much of Ghost Recon Breakpoint's early days.... At least in my view.

In doing so I keep reflecting on my SE 3 and 4 experiences and they all seem superior in retrospect. 'Flaws' in them I thought at the time now pale when seeings SE 5's current 'state'. Even if SE 5 is your first SE game..... if you see what I've seen you'll not be 'happy'. I'm sure time and patches will 'help'. But for now.....

While my gameplay can be mainly influenced by mood, mood can only get you so far in playing a game when it's 'not at its best'. Either it's enjoyable or not and SE 5 does not make me want to play it.

Like I said before if I'd not gotten access to it via Xbox ultimate and had payed my cash for it I'd have been disappointed, more massively disappointed.

The graphics in SE 5 are great but the gameplay is lacking. The music is apt and adapts to whats going on and the overall ambiance engrossing. But those 'bugs' and overall 'jank', kills the game and any immersion for me.

Yes SE 5 'feels' and is janky a.f. The gif's above show the 'barriers'....
But there's also the 'getting stuck in the scenery ' issues. Which is more annoying if there hasn't been a recent manual or autosave done.

And as if invisible walls weren't bad enough a missing NPC target(had not spawned or had despawned)stole the show and sealed the deal and an uninstall from me. An enemy that isn't there(even if the map distance is saying yes) etc etc. Isn't a great thing...

Map 3 is the very epitome of what is wrong with sniping in the game. A large open area..... You can snipe all you want as far as you want with no real repercussions. All alerts and rushing guards... Just sniping idiot lemmings. Alerted npc's running towards you from 2 km away... Snipe Snipe, where's the fun in that... I mean where's the fun in that longterm. It's fun the first time but it gets old fast.

Of note as well are some audio lines your character speaks. Odd and out of place at times. Like killing and exploding halfway though a mission and when crossing a field for the 5th time triggers a line about how he should hide in the grass...

I love the way enemies will get hurt and limp. Or if they have an arm injury they will cradle it and use a pistol instead of their rifle. I really like the way enemy npc's react to their comrades being hit or injured, those reactions are immersive. There is gameplay, there's some good gameplay moments but it all gets overshadowd by the jank.

Trying hard to be stealthy is a challenge but it's one that grants the same end result as going full rambo; So I kept asking why bother. That stealthy effort does't feel like it's rewarded. Granted it's all in the players prerogative, mood and playstyles are a personal take on each map within the game mechanics. It's all doable how you like.
That said, the path of least resistance happens and more often than not it's easier to progress by brute force.

Nothings perfect and for this game I have no time to take each map perfectly. Besides the cost of going full Rambo getting hunted or triggering reinforcements that are supposed to make it harder.... It barley feels like there's any repercussions! Just more lemmings to shoot.
Besides after being sniped, shot, machine gunned and exploded the enemy looks around for 30 seconds and then calls ALL CLEAR. It may have been similar in the previous iterations but it's more pronounced in SE5 and it's noticeable as being a.i. stupid; And so your almost given the go ahead to blast away regardless. All clear as they walk back to patrol over the 10 bodies you gunned down.

Hidden and Dangerous 2 from back in the day could teach a huge lesson on alerted guards staying alerted and altering their ongoing behaviors never mind the previous SE games.

SE 5 is less about sniping and more about being a dedicated marksman(at a push). A subtle and yet massive difference of distinction for a game and it's playstyles under the banner Sniper.

SE 5 from what I've seen has lacked distance to be a sniper in an undetectable meaningful way. It's lacked subsonic sniper rounds; And wtf is with the wooden rounds to knock out enemies....
This is the first WW2 game I've seen that you can play a sniper and are given the tools to not kill any npc! I like that you have options but it seems that those options have taken away from the main reason for the games name. Or are wooden rounds a multiplayer thing. I count the invasion mode as multiplayer.

I've dome more 'sniping' with the silenced pistol than anything else!

Anyway, enemies in the game are lemmings regardless of difficulty. Yes they try to do some minor outflanking tactics and suppressive fire but it's not that great. I thought they were on map 1 but I guess it's very map and pathing on the map dependent. It's not 'real' a.i. they're just following the shortest route to you; And like your character they can't vault over small walls..... So up a field, through a gate, down a field they go, straight into your wall of bullets. A better call back to enemy a.i. environment tactics can also be given to the Brothers in Arms games(they were tricky).
The number of times I've been crouched in a room aiming through the doorway in this game..... The lemming factor is super real. At least in previous SE games the enemy tried to flush you out with grenades... Not in SE5 that I've seen!

Map 2 has a lot of road traffic(actual vehicles) and they are easy to ambush(they explode well with all the barrels they transport). Fun enough, but it's not enough for long-term meaningful gameplay.
NPC enemies are lemmings as I said; They all charge forward and soon enough with a good position they bottleneck into you. That is only so much fun for so long. Even changing up the 'difficulty'. But not even medium' feels balanced.

The gameplay balance is a delicate thing. Too easy a setting and it's too braindead easy, overly so; Too hard a setting and it's too punishing; Shoot you thought the scenery kind of punishing. The a.i. does not know the difference between cover and concealment. Mix in a players own playstyle and it's a blended generalized non specific WW2 shooter with some quirky mechanics(and that's being generous).

In a lot of ways the game makes me feel like I'm playing one of the newer Hitman games. What with all the non lethal rounds, hiding enemy bodies etc... If only they had the steal uniform element form the Hidden and Dangerous games then that really would have shaken things up. Especially given your character is supposed to be fluent in German.

I don't know what this game is trying to be. The more I play the more I'm questioning why they did things, changed and designed mechanics as they did. All I'm seeing are the flaws. It's not a diamond in the rough it's a rough cut stone that should be rejected(or at least sent back for more work). Your mileage may vary. Maybe I'm being unlucky with the mechanics and in turn am judging it overly harsh.
Maybe my expectations were too high.

As for the multiplayer side I've no idea if that was done for longevity. Getting a human sniper to snipe you will become very tiresome once the maps are well known and a 'spot' becomes the goto place to essentially gank a player trying to do a mission(no wonder the balance is all over the place). I turned that option off from the start. If your into it then fair enough. I'd rather have a more playable single player game than have it be tuned to potential multiplayer elements(no wonder parts of the maps have no meaning to the solo campaign).

As usual with the PC vision played via Xbox Ultimate, the Xbox achievements are linked and the percentages are interesting.

33% of players finished the first map; 24% finished the second.....

Assassin's Creed Origins.... & Ghost Recon Wildlands....

Two more games I still keep installed. Not for any heavy game-play arcs but because they are 'done'/completed games and worth keeping because of the open worlds they 'are', fun and interesting to be in; When the mood takes.

Assassin's Creed Origins(post here

Ghost Recon Wildlands(post here and hard to think it's been four years since this one).

Despite what the real world complications of a game development company is/are; The games produced are ones following an open world formula which really appeals to me. Given both games success and the style of games in general over decades and multiple titles I'm not alone it would seem.

160+ blog posts for Ghost Recon Wildlands.....

Of the two games, I might have/have had 'slightly' more fun in GRW.....

Ghost Recon....

At a quick glance I have 160 blog posts regarding Ghost Recon Wildlands. I loved and played that game to bits for years. I could gush for hours about the game, imperfect as all things are but a massively playable game.

At a quick glance I have 4 Ghost Recon Breakpoint blog posts. I didn't even buy the game. Playing it twice via pre launch tests. Proof enough(of it's changes away from Wildlands and how bad I thought they were implemented in Breakpoint).

All ancient history now. Mid to late 2019 and up to March 2020 was Breakpoint's window from testing to launch; I could rant about it but it' snot worth the time.

I am surprised that it's been kept going and updated. Supported buy Ubi devs is commendable. I'm not sure if it's due to bone headedness or desire for profit(doubling down as it were). A.I. Team members seem to be coming in after all. Good effort after the horses bolted from the stables. I'm not sure Ubi/decision makers have really learned anything from the Breakpoint process.

At least thematically they are returning to a more true to form Tom Clancy genre for the franchise. Almost like they are in Bolivia again.

I'd still not touch the game with a barge pole but you got to love the dedication..... Or boneheadedness with them trying to improve things. Given it was a massive part of Wildlands(A.I. team) that took a long while to implement(in Breakpoint), it's a wonder it never registered(with the development of Breakpoint) as a no brainer element of the game from day one.....

Just saying...

Ghost Recon Breakpoint....

Reading back over some of my previous posts in the last week; I see what could be described as narky pessimism. Not to be a downer but sometimes things suck and a blogger blogs. Some things suck at the same time and a blogger blogs even more... So with that said another bit of game news brought my narky disappointment to the boil. Waffle incoming:

What I expected from 'the next' Ghost Recon game was to take Wildlands and improve on all the community had said; Along with what had been learnt in-house and work in new elements. What was revealed was not what I expected at all. From the get go I was disappointed by almost everything they listed as a feature or game mechanic. I was even more disappointed when I was in the closed Beta. The second Beta showed improvements on elements over the first; But the game was still a long way derived from Wildlands. As a big Wildlands fan I saw nothing to bring me into the next game.

For my part I think I loved Wildlands so much because it had the 3 A.I. team-members. That fact alone brought back gameplay memories and nostalgia from my Hidden and Dangerous day's (more the second game than the first). Wildlands was the first game since H&D2 that I could play and be tactical with an NPC team in real-time. Big key feature like that was removed from Breakpoint. No wonder I was put off.

Which leads me onto the latest news re 'a plan' from Ubi taking the game forward. After the first closed Beta one big thing to come from it was to 'bring back the A.I team'. As they said:

"4. AI Teammates

We announced at E3 2019 that AI Teammates would come back to Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and they will. Ghost Recon Breakpoint was designed from the ground up to be enjoyed in co-op up to four players, and as an innovative pure solo experience. As such, adding back AI Teammates to the game is a major undertaking that will still require time. We will update you as we progress towards their release."

So the game was multiplayer focused. And they will be 'fixing' it?! To put it politely I don't think they can do it justice. Given the in game A.I. NPC's are bullet sponges and the 'human' enemy NPC's were dumb as a rock. The need for a detailed A.I. system for companions is going to be an even greater challenge to implement than they say.

The game as a product isn't worth it, the work needed to make it better seems like a massive waste of time, energy, money. I don't think Ubi can work a No Man's Sky wand over this product.

If they took everything they learned, every thing they knew, everything that was developed from the first game; Mixed it all in the pot for the next with some new ingredients and came out with Breakpoint..... Well the decision makers have greater issues then they realise.

I'm really dumbstruck by the way they went from Wildlands to Breakpoint. I can't fathom the rationalisation of steps needed to f**k it up that bad.

I'm sure Beta feedback was a shock to them. Instead taking a step back and realising what they had and spend longer to 'fix'/redevelop it they; They weaked what they could for immediate use and doubled down. They released it and are going to work on it after the fact; Like a reworked Frankenstein monster till it 'works'. I fear for players on what that will end up getting. For those that stick it out.

The more I hear about Breakpoint the more frustrated I get at their decisions and thought processes.
Even more compounded by Ubi having a good community group with a keen ear to the ground of what players want, what they like and what they needed for the future.

And we get Breakoint..... Really!!! Lesser Destiny Breakpoint 1.0!! Raids!?!

Once bitten twice shy....

Ghost Recon Breakpoint....

I'm a massive fan of Ghost Recon Wildlands. I've played it with multiple playthrough's / characters / styles. I've piled in a massive amount of hours with Wildlands. I had hopes that Breakpoint would be more of the same with improvements from the Wildlands learning curve.

I've played the closed Alpha's of Breakpoint and was horrified unhappy by what I saw. Even if the second Alpha was better than the first for tech issues and overly harsh in game mechanic penalties; But I have no interest in even trying the open Beta. They did correct some issues that were glaring choices (imho) between tech tests. Remove A.I. teammates lead to them adding them back in(even if it will be 'later'). Slipping on a gentle grass slope and breaking a leg was reduced to being disorientated etc.... But what I hear of the Beta is not good and now there's even less time to 'change' things before it's released.

Vehicle handling, especially choppers was horrendous. I hate the Wildlands 'new' chopper handling that's been transferred over to Breakpoint and much preferred the old (non-console)style.

Don't get me started on the Bivvy/camping side of the game let alone crafting. They are a Far Cry from a decent system.

They learnt nothing going from one game to the development of the next. Heads in the clouds. Which is worse because they're good with community interactions.

One of three friends I shared my invites with had the chance to check the Alpha test. He was no massive fan of Wildlands but his criticism was even more harsh.

So many of the in game mechanics and enemies are frustratingly annoying, from Behemoths to the swarmers.

Breakpoint is a Destiny/Division clone with a paper thin Wildlands cover. Great if your into the Division or Destiny but I'm not so Breakpoint for me suffers even more in my view.

Forced community area's are immersion breaking for me. Especially when you are in a game like this where your outnumbered and struggling to survive with no real backup; Then you enter an area and there's 50 heavily armed spec-ops bumbling about like toddlers with paint. This game has so many negative issues for me, theme, game mechanics, story.... There are good points but they all weighed down with negatives it makes Breakpoint a frustrating follow up to Wildlands.

Graphics are beautiful. Pity about the rest....

GRW....

Nice to see one last update to the game. Given it's more PvP nature I doubt I'll be back to the game for it.... Not even one match to get the reward 'costume'.

GRW....

I finally got a chance to do Operation Oracle. It's a great addition to the game. Adding a new location, which was once a train tunnel dead end, now an underground facility. I really like the addition of Jon Bernthal with a great in game character. Way better than the future soldier tie in characters.

While I enjoyed it there were two things that I found a little "off". Two small things. I'm really nit picking.
First up a location they used. It's been used for normal missions, been there multiple times in co-op, been there with the Sam mission... It's an overused underground location. ./sigh*not there again* kind of way.
Secondly the ending, the new character 'gave up' a little bit too easily in his argument. I thought there would have been a bit more drama needed to end it.....

GRW....

It would seem that the year 3 content is being teased. Old news to some but it's not really news imho.
I don't go into the game much these day's. I did a few day's ago to check on the weekly challenge. It's nice to collect the community rewards after doing nothing..... Free is free. So when in the game I saw what everyone else saw, Operation Oracle.

Which doesn't say much. Time to look up an expert: Carbon Meister

GRW....

The second anniversary rewards are welcome, especially because of the new weapon. The game has introduced a configurable FAL.

The chute and the patch for me are collectors items, nice to have but will never use.

The anniversary FAL is added as a 'normal' weapon so does get to take advantage of mods; Unlike unchangeable specials. With both my solo campaign characters well sorted with gear/weapons; Only only one character can think of the FAL as an upgrade. My co-op duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude, but even at that I might stick with the weapon he has, the P90 Glory 'special'. I think I might need to collect better mods to alter that choice.... Choices, choices.

GRW....

That is cool(and more like it):

GRW....

I'm no fan of the Division games, so mixing in it's story-line with Ghost Recon is a vast game changer to the universe. One I'm ignoring as much as possible.  However the new "recordings" lead on to a parachute pickup that is claimable. I'm all about the claimable equipment. A bright orange chute with the Division 2 Phoenix logo. I followed the tapes, listened to each and claimed the chute at the end. The story-line is interesting but it's not something that would get me into the game. As for the chute, I used it once after claiming it and went back to the fourth echelon chute. I might switch to the Future Soldier version as it's a cool one as well. Choices, choices....

The chute never to be used again.....

GRW....

I thought I read that there was to be a free club 'gift' if you played the game with the release of the latest patch. But I think it has yet to come.... There was however a free claimable gift I didn't' expect there so I picked it up.

Kinda cool.

GRW....

While Ghost Recon has moved on in it's evolution to be more PvP and group PvE based; My interest in the game has wained. I've waffled about all this before. I've completed the campaign with two solo characters, taken one of them to complete the Tier system and the other half way. As for the third co-op/multiplayer only character; He is still stuck about mid way thorough normal levelling. His progress/map looks like an unorganised spaghetti junction. His gear and weapons are a shambles.
I'm well done with this game. Only returning to bring my best two through any special mission/operations like the Predator or Sam. Or like today when a new patch hits and things have been updated/tweaked etc.

I do have an itch to scratch with the new guerrilla mode for my co-op character but he is so under geared and under prepared he would have to be carried through it. And the new mode from what I've read isn't for the under prepared.

Just because the game has nothing new for my preferred gameplay doesn't mean I dislike it or the changes. The game has been improved in so many ways over the last year never mind the previous one. I hope year three brings more.

I'm not a lover of the new main menu screen but I'm sure I could get used to it:

I do love the new compass:

But I really love the new 'heat' map feature, funny to see all the path's taken. Spots in the desert from a heli landing and assault etc:

GRW....

Out of the blue last week I had an urge to go check the challenges in Ghost Recon; It feels so long since I've been in the game, feels longer than it really is. Only been a month!!! When I checked there was nothing interesting/new for me. Strange now that I see Week 1 of Season 11 has been released, I must have gone in just before it started.....

Looking at it I still can't be bothered with the 'Prestige' credit rewards. The season challenge rewards are also no longer a draw for me. Camo, camo, shotgun. No matter how the community is liking the weapon reward as the "new best thing".

Out of interest I searched and saw that Carbon Meister had a guide video out.

Great guide but it confirms to me that the challenge is only for the sake of a challenge. Chance and awkwardness. Those can be frustrating and I'm really in no mood to coddle the game(Mollycoddle rather than coddle coddle that is).

This has me wondering why I'm still checking up on the game. I know there isn't going to be anything really worth it for me. Only the new story missions may be worth it in future...

GRW....

Getting back to Ghost Recon for the new mission, I found myself poking around the menu's. Apparently I had prestige points to spend. There wasn't anything fantastic unlocked in the 8 or so crates I got. In opening them I passed the requirement for a free non prestige crate. I went for the spec ops instead of the ghost war version. But I think they both offer the same items these day's.

"meh":

GRW....

Last night I decided on the spur of the moment to give the last section of the latest "special" mission a go again.

I started off by crashing a helicopter in a very noobish way. Thankfully the mission auto restarts you 400 meters from the objective. So I ran. Better safe than sorry.

As things went I died about 5 times. Tier one is a pain with being one shotedededed. Lucky for me after every second death I must have gotten a kill in to "reset" the auto fail mission death counter; So I got there in the end.  Running out in front of traffic didn't help either. What can I say it was 3 a.m.

Clearing the town and getting to the truck portion of the mission was better than before.
As it turns out the ramp I thought I was aiming for was not the ramp I was supposed to be aiming for.

Ramp I was aiming for:

Ramp I should have aimed for:

It's the difference in description with U.S English language...

I was looking for the first description when I should have been looking for the second. Sill European that I am.

Less Evel Knievel, more road safety. Never through I say that about GRW.

Anyway barreling a 'dirty bomb' truck down the hill is a far superior way of getting to the "real" jump off point. Which I was wrong about(the jump); They give a large off the cliff gantry(ramp apparently, obviously!!!) and an automatic bailout and roll for your character.

Classy exit
Teammates on the other hand go down with the ship.

He'll be back!!

Glad that mission's done with.

As for the predator camo, it has the cool factor but practically you still get spotted at about the same distance from an enemy as you sneak about.

The mission:
