It’s not often that I get a day where I’m left without the internet. This is the connected age after all. But when revisiting the old homestead I am returned to the 90’s. Basic tv, no broadband.
While dial up was it’s own thing back then I wouldn’t even try it now. I'm tempted to see if the old pc would still work with dial-up.... Hmmmmmmm.
To help me with an internet connection while there I usually have a mobile usb connection, while not great it does the job for unhindered gaming and basic online needs. This dongle has now failed (not the mobile sim in it but the actual dongle). Oddly enough it’s last working day was the 26th of December, a day when I really, really needed it. It's served me well for nearly seven years.
While I could set my phone as a hotspot to provide a better speed than the dongle ever could the amount of data used is horrendous. Or rather the data usage meter it clocks up is massively exaggerated. Hotspot on and you want to see that 5mb image on the laptop well we’ll use 50mb against your data allowance. One quick browse of facebook on the laptop and it’s chewing up the allowance through the hotspot like I don’t know what. On two previous occasions (when used in a pinch) I was left with my data allowance drained. It all really boils down to the gaming. Specifically the pc online
gaming. It’s just too tempting to use the laptop for everything while
it's hotspot connected. Who doesn’t’ like to see/read on a bigger
screen. So I’ll use it only if I really, really, really have to but for now I’ll just use the phone by itself and leave the hotspot option very, very off.
So my lengthy waffling aside I'm left with the need for a replacement option. With the old dongle I used €10 on a weekly pre-pay option that gave me a 2GB data allowance. This was handy as it worked from Friday morning on week one till the following Friday at Midnight so I would only need to pay €10 for two weeks as long as I didn't go over the cap. Friday's were all that mattered to me so I'd keep an eye on using 1GB on each of the Friday's. That really meant no Youtube when away but all else was covered.
I am now thankful that it broke as it "made" me look into the current options from the mobile providers. Strangely enough the company I was with no longer sells the dongles, preferring to go for the larger wireless hubs. Those are a lot less mobile that a USB sized stick. So in browsing I found this:
60 Euro gets me a replacement device and 6 month's of broadband usage with a 50GB data cap(€30+30). €5 a month for just over 8GB of data..... €1.25 a week for 2GB of data....
What could go wrong....
