I've not been into any of the older titles. I think I got about halfway though the first ever AC game. Even Blackflag didnt' get me to stay with it for more than an hour. The free versions I've gotten through Xbox gold and the like have all been unplayed. But this new version with it's Ghost Recon/Far Cry Ubisoft mechanics and feel appeals to me.
I've other games to get through first so this is one I'll be putting on the back burner until it's got all it's patches and extra content bundled for a sale price. It's not a perfect game but it is good and with time could be great.
ACG had a good review video as well as another about the little details the game has.
